Celebrating summer and cycling

Strathalbyn will host the Santos Tour Down Under Men’s Stage 5 finish on Saturday, 19 January 2019. Departing from Glenelg at 11:30am, the Tour riders are expected to reach the finish line in Dawson Street, Strathalbyn at around 3:30pm.

With thousands expected into Strathalbyn to watch the Stage 5 race end, the Strathalbyn Tourism Association and Alexandrina Council will be hosting companion event “Summer & Spokes in Strathalbyn” to create a fun, festive, family-friendly day for visitors and locals alike. Kicking off at 10:00am, there will be a host of events and activities throughout the day.

Read on to discover what to expect, as well as relevant information relating to the Santos TDU such as road closures, parking and transportation.

Follow the Strathalbyn TDU Event Notice Board, for updates and inspiration for our Bike Decorating competition and the Santos Best Dressed Town competition. There are also the Santos Best Dressed Private Residence, Paddock, School and Commercial Property competitions which you can enter or nominate for.

Summer & Spokes Companion Event

In the Soliders Memorial Garden


Bring a picnic rug and relax in the beautiful parklands while live jazz and great vibes float through the air. There are games to play, ducks to feed and plenty of stalls offering a diverse array of global cuisines, giftware, homewares, jewellery and other exciting merchandise.

Kids’ Activities

Uniting Church Hall (St Andrew’s)

Just across from the Soldier’s Memorial Gardens, there will be a fun range of kids’ activities in the Uniting Church hall, arranged by Strathalbyn And Surrounds Spectrum Connection, a local organisation that offers support to families of those with autism. They will be providing autism-friendly spaces and activities along with many other fun things for all kids of all ages and abilities to enjoy.

Parent supervision required.

The bike decorating and colouring competitions have now closed. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at 12 noon, Saturday, 19 January at the rotunda in the Soldiers Memorial Garden.

If you haven’t entered, images can still be downloaded for a fun school holiday activity and we still encourage everyone to decorate bikes and homes for the day.

Enjoy a full day of family fun

There are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy across the day. Pop into the Strathalbyn Visitor Information Centre on South Terrace to discover all the treasures of the town, including art and nature trails, stately heritage buildings, and other points of interest.

With so many secrets worth sharing, it might be worth it to stay an extra day or two!
