Home / About / Christmas in Strathalbyn

Christmas where the Angas Flows is a free annual Strathalbyn community event that has been running for many years.  It’s a great way to celebrate the end of the school year and provides an opportunity for local businesses to thank the community for their support.  The event is covered by a total ‘Dry Zone’ (7am-7am) to encourage a fun family atmosphere.

The highlight of the event is the Christmas Pageant that winds its way through the main streets of Strathalbyn, finishing up at the Soldiers Memorial Gardens. The Strathalbyn & Lakes Tourist Association  helps co-ordinate the Pageant.

Carols by Candlelight and the Evening Fireworks are also part of the event. Carols by Candlelight is organised every year by the Strathalbyn Church Inter-Council, they also organise the children’s rides and entertainment .

Sponsor the Event

The Carols and entertainment are expensive components of the Christmas event, so every year, we invite business and organisations to support the event with sponsorship in order that Christmas Where the Angas Flows is as enjoyable as possible.

Crowds on the day have exceeded 3,000 people, and sponsors’ names are included on the “big screen” at the event.  If you would like to support the event with sponsorship please contact the SLTA at info@slta.asn.au.

General Pageant Information

The Pageant starts at 6.30pm (with floats lining up in Rowe Street from 6.00pm) and meanders it’s way through town.

The SLTA encourages local businesses, community groups and not-for-profit organisations to enter a float into the pageant. It is free to enter a float, but all participants must be registered by November 30.  The Entry Registration Form can be downloaded here.

Pageant floats and entrants line up along Rowe Street (entering from East Terrace end) from about 6.00pm onwards. SAPOL leads the Pageant at 6.30pm, followed by the larger vehicles like the CFS, balloon burner and prime movers. Larger vehicles are encouraged to be at the front of the line (so arriving earlier rather than later is better for these) with others following as they arrive. The Pageant finishes near Mill Street, with those walking using the Mill Street footpath. All floats and larger vehicles complete their journey in Colman Terrace and must wait for the road closure infrastructure to be removed. Normal road rules apply once outside the road closures.

The winning float wins $200 prize money, plus takes home the Strathalbyn Christmas Parade Best Float Trophy (which was made by the Strathalbyn Woodshed).

Contact the SLTA for more information and keep updated on all things Pageant at our Facebook page.
