Strathalbyn was settled more than 175 years ago (1839) by Scottish immigrants, on land that was an important meeting place for the Peramangk and Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal people.

Strathalbyn has numerous antique shops, bric-a-brac outlets, op-shops and second hand book stores. Antiques are concentrated in the High Street shopping precinct, with other second-hand shopping opportunities located in the side streets off Dawson Street.
Strathalbyn is a horse lovers paradise, with an attractive racecourse, polo grounds and trotting track. Riding schools also offer lessons to visitors and residents, and there are several riding clubs catering for all age groups.
