Strathalbyn was settled more than 175 years ago (1839) by Scottish immigrants, on land that was an important meeting place for the Peramangk and Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal people.

Christmas Where the Angas Flows is the annual Strathalbyn Christmas Party, an annual event to celebrate the coming of Christmas. Held in the evening of the last day of school, it is a community fun event. The fun begins with the Christmas Pageant parade through High Street and Dawson Street at 6:30pm, followed by family entertainment in the Soldiers Memorial Gardens. Traditional carol singing led by local church groups as dusk approaches. Culminating in a finale of fireworks to end the evening.
Food and drink available from stallholders in Albyn Terrace , free entertainment for the young ones, glow sticks on sale. Bring a blanket and settle in on the lawns for the evening. This event is alcohol free.

Strathalbyn has numerous antique shops, bric-a-brac outlets, op-shops and second hand book stores. Antiques are concentrated in the High Street shopping precinct, with other second-hand shopping opportunities located in the side streets off Dawson Street.
Strathalbyn is a horse lovers paradise, with an attractive racecourse, polo grounds and trotting track. Riding schools also offer lessons to visitors and residents, and there are several riding clubs catering for all age groups.
